What Do We Believe?

We are a church of big faith. While there is no way that we can reduce our beliefs to a few points, we believe in the Bible and strive to remain true to the timeless, infallible Word of God.

If you are a first-time visitor to our site or you aren’t familiar with us, this generic statement might not help you in your search for a church home or a comfortable place to visit. In an effort to get acquainted, here are a few Frequently Asked Questions:

What Denomination Are You?

We are not a part of any religious denomination. Our congregation is autonomous (self-governing) and not affiliated with any central church headquarters. We promote fellowship between other congregations who are commonly identified by the name “Church of Christ”, but have no stronger ties to them other than spiritual fellowship and mutual support.

The New Testament provides the foundation for the name we choose to wear – “The church of Christ” – in Romans 16:16. Yet, this phrase represents more than a name, it is a description. The Bible teaches us, “For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (I Corinthians 6:20). Each individual member, and the church itself, is the exclusive property of Jesus Christ. We are Christ’s disciples, a body of believers committed to our Lord and Savior.

Do You Use Musical Instruments In Worship?

We are convinced that music is an important part of our worship and our voices are the most powerful instrument. For this reason, we sing a cappella.

Do You Practice Baptism?

Yes. We believe that Christian salvation comes through a process often referred to as “believer immersion”. When someone is old enough to come to an independent decision that they have sinned and are alienated from God, we immerse them in water for the forgiveness of their sins and so that might receive the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Are You Gender-Inclusive?

We understand that each person is uniquely made by God and filled with talents and gifts for use in His service. While we believe that Scriptures limit church governance and worship leadership roles to men, women play an important part in congregation. Women are encouraged to serve in education, the sound room, missionary outreach and other areas of importance.

Do You Perform Same-Sex Marriages?

We believe that the Bible teaches that God’s formula for marriage has been one man for one woman for life. We welcome all believers to join us for worship to discern this truth for themselves.

Who Are Your Church Leaders?

We have one ultimate leader – Jesus. We believe that Jesus purchased the church with the blood of His sacrifice; therefore, He has the utmost authority in all we do. When the Apostle Paul wrote to the earliest Christian churches he referred to Jesus as the “Head” of a spiritual body by observing, “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” (Colossians 1:18).

When it comes to local oversight we believe that each congregation of the Lord’s church should be independently lead by a group of men called Elders, Shepherds or Bishops (each of these names refers to the same position). Our Elders operate independent of any larger denominational board or congress. These leaders take their role as spiritual leaders and mentors seriously as they guide the spiritual development and outreach of the church.

We hope that this gives you an insight into our congregation. If you would like a more detailed Bible-based answer to these questions, or if you have other questions about the Church of Christ in St. Mary’s County, please feel free to contact us.
